Kyphosis generally refers to a forward rounding of the back. However, kyphosis doesn’t always mean a round back or a “hunchback.”
In adults, kyphosis develops when the normal lumbar curve (or lordosis) flattens. The normal lumbar spine should be lordotic or curved in (as in “swayback”). As we age, the lumbar spine tends to flatten (become kyphotic), and this can affect balance and posture. When the center of gravity is pushed forward as a result of kyphosis, people will tend to lean forward while walking, which can cause or worsen back pain.
While kyphosis can occur at any age, it’s most common in women over the age of 50.
